A comparison between wired and wireless computer networks

Computer networking as we know it today has evolved quite a lot since American universities created networking in the late 1960's . To lay it simple a computer network allows computers to communicate with many other computers and to share resources and information. "Advanced Research Projects Agency Network" (ARPANET) for the United States Department of Defense. It was the first operational computer network in the world. Development of the network began in 1969, based on designs developed during the 1960s . There are mainly two types of which a network can be made , its either wired or wireless .

Starting with wired network , Twisted-Pair Wire - This is the most widely used medium for telecommunication. Twisted-pair wires are ordinary telephone wires which consist of two insulated copper wires twisted into pairs and are used for both voice and data transmission. The use of two wires twisted together helps to reduce crosstalk and electromagnetic induction. The transmission speed range from 2 million bits per second to 100 million bits per second.

Coaxial Cable – These cables are widely used for cable television systems, office buildings, and other work sites for local area networks. The cables consist of copper or aluminum wire wrapped with insulating layer typically of a flexible material with a high dielectric constant, all of which are surrounded by a conductive layer. The layers of insulation help minimize interference and distortion. Transmission speed range from 200 million to more than 500 million bits per second. Fiber Optics – These cables consist of one or more thin filaments of glass fiber wrapped in a protective layer. It transmits light which can travel over long distance and higher bandwidths. Fiber-optic cables are not affected by electromagnetic radiation. Transmission speed could go up to as high as trillions of bits per second. The speed of fiber optics is hundreds of times faster than coaxial cables and thousands of times faster than twisted-pair wire. The advantages of Wired networks are that they offer higher speed than wireless networks. Wired network adapters cost less than wireless network adapters. You can get a wired network adapter for $10 while Most wireless network adapters cost between $30 and $100. Wired networks tend to be more reliable than wireless networks. Unless there’s a problem with one of the network cards, the cables, or the switch or hub, a wired network should deliver its full performance all the time. By contrast, throughput on a wireless network can be affected not only by the distance and obvious obstacles such as walls and floors but also by its immediate surroundings. For example, if you put a stack of books next to your laptop’s wireless network adapter, you may reduce its range. If you’re using your laptop on your lap, your body may block part of the signal.

On the other hand the benefits of wireless over wired are Flexibility , Because the computers in a wireless network aren’t constrained by cables, a wireless network offers greater flexibility than a wired network. You can move the computers from room to room without trailing cables. Lack of Cables,Wireless networks are great for locations where, for whatever reason, you don’t want to or cannot install cables. For example in homes, you can set up a wireless network without having cables from room to room. a wireless network will probably seem more attractive than a wired network.

A comparison is not always in favor of one over the other , in the case of networking its the functionality you want from the network the demands and favors you heading in favor of each one , and who knows you may just want to have the best of both worlds by combining wired and wireless in your network. For example, you may want to implement a wired network with a wireless access point that allows your laptops to connect via wireless network interface cards from wherever in the building they happen to be. The wired portion of your network will be fast, and the wireless portion of your network will be flexible.

My good friend Ayman Farhat and i Jad Berro went to the annual "أيام العلوم "(days of science) science fair . as a geek i did not really like or was amazed by the stuff there but an "average-joe" will definitely have fun .

The "arduino" tutorial

There is no USB direct connection, so to program the duino you will need some kind of FTDI cable or an external programmer
